What is BASIX?
BASIX is the acronym for Building Sustainability Index, which is an online tool to assess Water, Thermal Performance and Energy Efficiency of residential buildings in NSW.
When do I need a BASIX Certificate?
A BASIX Certificate is required for all New Residential Buildings, Alterations & Additions over $50,000 and swimming pools or spas that have 40,000L or greater. The BASIX Certificate forms part of the Complying Development Certificate or Development Application.
How long does the BASIX Certificate last?
The BASIX Certificate is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. The certificate validity can be extended by contacting the assessor prior to the expiration date.
What is the difference between a BASIX Certificate and a NatHERS Energy Rating?
BASIX is a NSW government initiative focusing on water, energy and thermal performance. NatHERS is a national scheme that primarily assesses a home’s thermal performance and provides a star rating based on the design’s energy efficiency.
The NatHERS assessment can be used for a more accurate and flexible assessment as part of the thermal performance of the BASIX Certificate.
In order to achieve the best thermal performance at the lowest cost we recommend using both BASIX and a NatHERS energy rating.
